USA — wine

Wahluke Slope

A broad, gently inclined south-facing bench above the Columbia River that captures more heat units than any other Washington AVA — essentially desert viticulture at the extreme. Sandy, low-nutrient soils force vine stress and restrict yields naturally. The zone supplies fruit to many of Washington's top labels under vineyard-designated bottlings; Sagemoor Farms and Ancient Lakes are the region's foundational vineyard sources.

Year Rating Notes
2024 94 Wahluke Slope's 2024 delivered powerful concentration in a clean, smoke-free vintage. The high desert conditions produced deeply coloured, structured reds with the appellation's characteristic mineral intensity.
2023 89 Moderate heat delivered wines of precision over raw power. Excellent season for aromatic white varieties.
2022 96 Near-perfect heat accumulation without the extremes of 2021. Wines of concentration and balance define the year across varieties.
2021 91 Heat dome added to the slope's already-high temperatures. Riesling with retained acid provided unexpected freshness. Syrah and Grenache were exceptional.
2020 80 Smoke was significant on the slope but harvesting at first light before daily smoke build-up allowed some producers to achieve clean fruit.
2019 93 Intensely warm season capitalised on the Wahluke Slope's natural heat accumulation. Syrah, Grenache, and Riesling all achieved exceptional ripeness levels.
2017 91 Very hot season delivered intense, concentrated wines. The slope's heat amplified the already warm year, producing the boldest Wahluke Slope style on record.
2016 96 Wahluke Slope 2016 produced wines of extraordinary concentration. The slope's powerful heat accumulation combined with ideal growing conditions created the most structured, ageworthy wines from this warm sub-AVA.
2015 93 Already the warmest WA sub-AVA, Wahluke Slope 2015 reached temperatures that challenged even heat-adapted varieties. Producers with irrigation management produced structured, concentrated wines of longevity.
2014 93 Wahluke Slope's high desert location delivered a powerful 2014 with intense sun exposure and significant diurnal temperature variation preserving acidity in otherwise richly concentrated fruit. Cabernet and Syrah produced deep, structured wines with impressive extraction.
