Spain — wine

Rueda DO

Spain's premier white wine appellation for Verdejo — a high-altitude plateau (750-900m) in Castilla y León producing wines of striking freshness, herbal character, and mineral precision. The combination of extreme continental climate (hot days, very cold nights) and alluvial soils with white limestone and gravel delivers Verdejo of unusual aromatic intensity: fennel, cut grass, white peach, and grapefruit with a characteristic bitter almond finish and persistent acidity. Rueda DO was Spain's first designated white wine DO (1980) and remains the standard for Verdejo globally. The appellation also produces fine Sauvignon Blanc (often blended with Verdejo) and traditional Rueda Palido (sherry-style).
