South Africa — wine

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley ('Heaven and Earth Valley') is South Africa's most celebrated cool-climate wine region — a series of three wards south of Hermanus on the Walker Bay coast, cooled by the Southern Ocean. The valley's ancient shale and clay soils at 100-300m altitude, combined with cool maritime breezes from Walker Bay, create conditions ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of European elegance. Hamilton Russell established the region's potential in 1976; today the three Hemel-en-Aarde wards (Valley, Ridge, Upper) produce South Africa's most internationally celebrated cool-climate wines — rivalling Burgundy in their elegance and mineral precision.
