Germany — wine

Ahr

The Ahr is Germany's most celebrated Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) region — a narrow, south-facing river valley carved through volcanic slate and greywacke, 50km south of Cologne. Despite being Germany's smallest quality wine region (600 hectares), the Ahr produces Pinot Noir of extraordinary elegance and mineral depth: the volcanic slate terroir provides the natural drainage and heat retention that Pinot Noir requires, while the steep south-facing valley sides moderate the continental climate. Meyer-Näkel, the region's most celebrated producer, helped establish the Ahr as Germany's answer to Chambolle-Musigny — producing Spätburgunder that rivals Burgundy for delicacy and mineral precision.
