Canada — wine

Niagara Peninsula

The Niagara Peninsula is Ontario's most important wine region and Canada's second most significant after BC's Okanagan Valley, situated between Lake Ontario to the north and Lake Erie to the south. The twin lakes' thermal moderating influence and the Niagara Escarpment's slope and drainage create a unique microclimate that allows vinifera cultivation at this northern latitude. The region is particularly celebrated for its Icewine — benefiting from reliably cold winters — alongside serious Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc. The Niagara Escarpment and Twenty Mile Bench sub-appellations are the most prestigious sites.
