Lake Chelan

The alpine lake district around Lake Chelan, a fjord-like glacial trough in north-central Washington deepened by ice to 453 metres — deep enough to maintain consistent cold temperatures that moderate summer heat and prevent hard autumn freezes. Granitic soils over glacial outwash at 600–900 metres elevation produce wines of real aromatic purity; pinot gris, riesling, and pinot noir thrive in the cooler exposures.

Year Rating Notes
2024 93 Lake Chelan's 2024 was a superb season. The deep alpine lake moderated what was otherwise a very warm Columbia interior season, producing Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Syrah of excellent balance and aromatic intensity.
2022 93 Lake Chelan's unique microclimate — high elevation, deep glacial lake moderation — produced wines of exceptional purity in 2022. Pinot Gris and Riesling showed crisp mineral character; Syrah and Cabernet Franc from upper lake sites achieved full ripeness. Hard Row to Hoe and Tsillan Cellars both produced benchmark lake-moderated wines.
