Yamhill-Carlton

The rolling Coast Range foothills around the towns of Yamhill and Carlton, producing pinot noirs of notable structural complexity and consistent depth. Marine sedimentary Willakenzie and Peavine soils — ancient seabed tilted by Coast Range uplift — give wines of savoury earth and red fruit with fine, persistent tannins. The zone is drier than the hills north and east, slightly extending the season.

Year Rating Notes
2024 95 Yamhill-Carlton's 2024 delivered loamy Willakenzie Pinot Noir of outstanding precision and body. The vintage's warmth added texture while the growing season's length preserved floral aromatic development — wines of exceptional complexity from the full range of this diverse appellation.
2022 94 Yamhill-Carlton's marine sedimentary soils added texture and minerality to 2022's ripeness. Elk Cove, Soter, and Penner-Ash all produced exceptional estate wines. The sub-AVA demonstrated that its white clay soils are capable of the same peak quality as Jory-dominant Dundee Hills in exceptional years.
2020 80 Smoke taint moderated relative to the valley floor. Marine sedimentary soils' position above the valley's smoke pool provided partial protection. Elk Cove and Soter managed the season carefully. Yamhill-Carlton fared better than the Dundee Hills in 2020.
2017 89 Warm, dry summer produced concentrated Pinot of early accessibility. The marine sediment soils' natural acid retention preserved freshness through the heat.
2016 97 Ribbon Ridge's ancient Willakenzie marine sediment soils produced wines of extraordinary elegance in 2016. Beaux Frères and other top producers achieved career-defining expressions.
2015 87 Ribbon Ridge's cool Willakenzie marine sediment soils moderated the extreme heat somewhat, though less successfully than Eola-Amity. The vintage produced rich, accessible Pinot Noir earlier than typical.
2014 95 Yamhill-Carlton 2014 showed the appellation's Willakenzie loam at its most expressive. The vintage's warmth added flesh to the naturally structured wines without sacrificing freshness, producing a style that bridges Dundee Hills power and Ribbon Ridge precision.
2013 94 Yamhill-Carlton's 2013 captured the vintage's cool precision in wines of restrained elegance. The loamy Willakenzie soils delivered characteristic structured Pinot Noir of unusual complexity — wines that will reward 15+ years of cellaring.
2012 86 Yamhill-Carlton's 2012 was a vintage of variable results. The loamy Willakenzie soils that drain well delivered reasonable quality from the most disciplined producers; wetter, clay-heavy sites struggled significantly with the late September rain.
