Mercurey

The most important appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise — the large, diverse zone south of the Côte de Beaune producing accessible Burgundy from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at significantly lower prices than the famous northern communes. Mercurey covers around 670 hectares of mostly red wine production from clay-limestone soils, with 31 premier cru vineyards including Clos du Roi, Clos des Myglands, and Les Champs Martins. The best wines offer genuine Burgundian character — earthy, complex, and age-worthy — at prices that make serious Burgundy accessible.
