Portugal's premier red wine DOC, known for schist-rich terraced vineyards along the Douro River. While the Douro's reputation was built on Port wine, its dry table wines from indigenous varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão) have emerged as some of Europe's most exciting reds. The Upper Douro (Douro Superior) offers especially concentrated expressions.
