Burgundy's southernmost and most accessible wine region, producing Chardonnay from limestone and clay soils between Tournus and Mâcon. The finest expressions come from the limestone outcrops of Pouilly-Fuissé (France's most celebrated Mâconnais appellation), Saint-Véran, and Viré-Clessé. Mâconnais Chardonnay is more generous and peachy than Chablis or the Côte de Beaune — approachable young but increasingly showing aging potential from village-level producers pushing quality boundaries.
