The western sub-zone of Rioja DOCa, centred on Haro and the Ebro River — the highest altitude, coolest, and wettest part of the Rioja appellation. Calcareous clay soils over iron-rich limestone produce Tempranillo-dominant wines of the greatest elegance and aging potential in all of Rioja. La Rioja Alta, CVNE, Marqués de Murrieta, López de Heredia, and Muga are headquartered in or near Haro in the historic 'Barrio de la Estación' (railway station district) established in the 1890s.
