The driest and most remote of the three Douro sub-zones, stretching toward the Spanish border in the upper Douro valley. The extreme continental climate (scorching summers, freezing winters) produces the most concentrated and powerful Douro table wines. Indigenous varieties — Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca — on steep schist terraces. The sub-zone was long reserved for port production but table wine producers have revealed extraordinary dry wine potential.
