Umbrian DOCG producing Italy's most tannic wine from the indigenous Sagrantino grape; clay-limestone hills at 300-600m altitude around the medieval hilltop town of Montefalco. Dry red requires 37 months minimum aging (12 in oak, 7 in bottle); the resulting wines are extraordinarily structured and age for 30+ years. Sweet Passito version from dried grapes is traditional at Easter. Sagrantino has the highest tannin levels of any Italian variety.
