Austria's premier red wine DAC in the central Burgenland; Blaufränkisch from iron-rich clay soils produces intense, spicy reds with dark cherry, violets, white pepper, and mineral depth. The variety is identical to Germany's Lemberger and Slovakia's Frankovka; in Mittelburgenland it achieves its greatest expression. Pannobile producers (voluntary quality group) set the standard; wines age 10-20+ years.
