Franschhoek — 'French Corner' — was settled by French Huguenot refugees in the 1680s, who brought their winemaking traditions to this picturesque valley east of Stellenbosch. Today it produces excellent Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, and blends from mountain vineyards, and is South Africa's culinary capital with an extraordinary concentration of top restaurants.
