Gigondas, in the southern Rhône appellation carved from the Dentelles de Montmirail rocky massif, produces powerful, structured reds led by Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre. The appellation's limestone and clay soils and the mistral wind create wines of remarkable concentration and aromatic complexity — often described as Châteauneuf-du-Pape's wild younger sibling. Full appellation status was achieved in 1971.
