Vacqueyras, adjacent to Gigondas in the southern Rhône, produces generous, aromatic reds and rosés from Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre on the alluvial terraces of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The appellation, elevated from Côtes du Rhône Villages to independent AOC in 1990, produces wines of remarkable value: comparable depth and warmth to Gigondas at more accessible prices.
