The Loire Valley's most celebrated appellation, Sancerre produces benchmark Sauvignon Blanc from chalk, flint (silex), and limestone soils on the right bank of the Loire. The wines are crisp, mineral, and intensely aromatic with green herbs, citrus, and distinctive smoky flint character from silex soils. Sancerre also produces a small amount of Pinot Noir red and rosé of remarkable elegance.
