Germany's most southerly and warmest wine region, Baden stretches 400km from Heidelberg to Basel along the eastern bank of the Rhine. Unlike other German regions, Baden specialises in Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), producing Germany's most celebrated red wines. Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) also excel. The Kaiserstuhl — a volcanic island in the Rhine — produces intense, volcanic-mineral wines of great complexity. Baden's southern warmth and the Burgundy varieties' affinity for the region make these wines genuinely comparable to fine Burgundy.
