Istria, the triangular peninsula shared between Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy on the northern Adriatic, produces some of central Europe's most distinctive wines. Malvazija Istarska (Malvasia Istriana) is the dominant white variety — rich, aromatic, and uniquely Istrian. The red Teran (Refosco) from the red terra rossa soils ('crvena zemlja') produces high-acid, iron-rich reds of great character. Motovun and Poreč are the key towns. The Italian influence on cuisine and viticulture is pronounced — Istrian white truffles are among the world's finest, making local wines the ideal accompaniment.
