China — wine

China Shandong Wine Region

China's oldest modern wine region, centered on the Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong province — the same latitude as Bordeaux — where the Yellow Sea moderates temperatures and the granite and loam soils produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, and Chardonnay. Yantai city is the historic heart of Chinese wine, home to Changyu Pioneer Wine Company (established 1892 by Zhang Bishi) — China's oldest winery, predating all other Chinese commercial wine production by decades. Shandong produces more wine by volume than any other Chinese province and has become the testing ground for high-end Sino-French joint ventures.
