South Africa — wine

Tulbagh Wine Region

Tulbagh is a secluded mountain valley north of Cape Town, ringed by the Winterhoek, Witzenberg, and Obiekwa Mountains — one of the Cape's most dramatic wine settings. The valley's unique microclimate (cooled by mountain breezes, with high sunshine hours) and sandstone-slate soils produce wines of distinctive character across a wide range of varieties. Tulbagh is most notable for Rhine Riesling (unusually successful here), Shiraz, and a growing reputation for Cap Classique sparkling wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
