South-central Bulgaria between the Balkan Mountains and Rhodope; continental climate with warm, dry summers — Bulgaria's warmest wine region. Indigenous varieties: Mavrud (deep, tannic red), Rubin (Nebbiolo x Syrah cross), and Misket (aromatic white). Also succeeds with international Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Red soils on limestone and clay. Bulgaria's most important wine region.
