Portugal — wine

Algarve Wine Region

Portugal's southernmost wine region on the Atlantic coast; intense Mediterranean sunshine, limestone and clay soils. Four DOC sub-regions (Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, Tavira). Indigenous Negra Mole (red) and Crato Branco (white); also Arinto, Touriga Nacional, and Syrah planted recently. Historically bulk wine for tourists; quality transformation underway with serious producers targeting export markets.
