Speyside

Speyside contains more whisky distilleries than any other region on Earth — over 50 active distilleries along the River Spey and its tributaries in northeast Scotland. The Speyside style is characterised by elegance, fruit, and accessibility: apple, pear, honey, toffee, and vanilla from ex-bourbon casks; dried fruit, Christmas cake, and spice from ex-sherry. The region's iconic distilleries (Glenfiddich, Macallan, Balvenie, Glenlivet) produce the world's best-selling single malts. Craigellachie, Mortlach, and Aberlour represent the weightier, more savoury face of Speyside.

2017	91	Exceptional Scottish barley harvest; warm summer with ideal moisture balance. One of the finest years for Speyside distillation in the decade.
2015	86	Good harvest year; high-quality Scottish barley with excellent fermentable sugars. Well-balanced Speyside new make with characteristic fruit-forward character.
2013	84	Warm, wet autumn; good barley quality with high starch levels. Speyside distilleries produced particularly floral, honeyed new-make spirit.
2009	92	A clean, consistent Speyside production year — not an exceptional vintage but producing reliable, well-structured spirit across all major distilleries. The 15-year stocks from 2009 are entering premium expressions now and showing excellent balance of fruit and wood.
2003	94	The 2003 Speyside summer was the hottest in 500 years — barley ripened early and rapidly, producing a higher-sugar new make than usual. The resulting spirit is sweeter and more fruit-forward than average Speyside, with shorter optimal maturation windows. Glenfarclas 21 from 2003 stocks and Aberlour A'Bunadh Batch 50+ expressions show this character.
1997	96	The 1997 Speyside vintage is the decade's finest: a warm, dry summer allowed full barley ripening and produced spirit of extraordinary richness. Glenfiddich 21 Year Old, Balvenie 25, and Glenfarclas 30 draws all include 1997 stocks as core components. Independent bottlers' 1997 single casks from Speyside command significant premiums.
