Scotland — spirits

Islay

Islay (pronounced 'Eye-lah') produces the world's most distinctive whisky style: heavily peated, iodine-infused, brine-lashed single malts that divide opinion more decisively than any other spirit category. The three classic 'Kildalton' distilleries on the south coast — Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin — produce the paradigmatic Islay style: medicinal iodine, tar, sea salt, smoked fish, then sweetness underneath. Bruichladdich's Octomore is the most heavily peated whisky commercially produced (200+ PPM phenols). Kilchoman is the newest distillery (2005) and the first farm distillery on Islay in 125 years.

Year Rating Notes
2021 85 Good quality year; high phenol barley with classic Islay maritime influence.
2019 83 Cool, Atlantic-influenced season; elegant, complex spirit with fine medicinal and maritime notes.
2017 90 Outstanding barley harvest; warm summer enabled high phenol extraction with excellent spirit character. One of the finest recent Islay vintages.
2015 84 Classic Islay season; balanced maritime conditions with good barley quality. Well-integrated peaty character in new make.
2014 91 A solid, clean Islay production year with all major distilleries at full capacity. The 2014 stocks are entering the 10-year expression range and show typical distillery character well — no dramatic peaks or troughs.
2013 87 Good peat harvest conditions; high phenol levels in Islay barley with ideal Atlantic moisture influence. Rich, intensely smoky new make spirit.
2009 93 The 2009 Islay vintage coincided with Bruichladdich's revival era at full capacity — Octomore series 6, 7, and 8 draw on 2009 stocks for some expressions. Lagavulin 2009 stocks are entering the 16-year expression cycle and showing exceptional quality.
2001 95 The 2001 Islay year represents Ardbeg's first vintage under the Glenmorangie stewardship — an exceptional production year that produced the stocks for the legendary Ardbeg Uigeadail and Corryvreckan releases. Lagavulin and Laphroaig stocks from 2001 at 20+ years are extraordinary.
1990 97 The 1990 Islay vintage is considered a generational high point: all eight distilleries producing in exceptional form. Lagavulin's '1990 Distillers Edition' Pedro Ximénez is the most celebrated single malt release from this era. Independent bottlings of 1990 Laphroaig, Caol Ila, and Bowmore achieve five-figure auction prices.
