The northernmost and most prestigious sub-region of Vinho Verde, Monção e Melgaço is the exclusive territory of Alvarinho (Albariño in Spain) — producing Portugal's most complex and age-worthy white wines from schist and granite soils above the Minho River. These wines have little in common with the light, fizzy Vinho Verde of popular perception.
