Corsica's most important wine appellation surrounding Napoleon's birthplace, producing indigenous Sciaccarello reds of notable elegance and aromatic Vermentino whites on granitic soils above the Gulf of Ajaccio. Sciaccarello — Corsica's prized indigenous red — produces silky, fragrant wines of remarkable lightness on granite, with pepper, red fruit, and Mediterranean maquis character that bears no resemblance to the tannic reputation of Mediterranean reds.
