Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France
About this product
The most ethereal expression of Southern Rhône Grenache. 100% old-vine Grenache from sandy soils — which create naturally lower yields and translucent wines. Unlike most Châteauneuf (dark, concentrated, Mediterranean power), Rayas is pale, almost translucent, perfumed, and otherworldly in its delicacy. The wine confounds all expectations of Southern Rhône: raspberry, rose, garrigue, iron. Vintage variation is extreme — only a perfect year produces the grand Rayas. BC: essentially auction only.

Château Rayas's pale, translucent Grenache paradox: despite its ethereal delicacy, it has the structure for fine poultry. Whole chicken's fat and sweet meat balance Rayas's fine tannin; garrigue herbs (thyme, lavender, rosemary) are a direct mirror of the wine's herbal terroir signature.

Château Rayas Grenache and Provençal herb-roasted lamb: the defining Rhône pairing. The wine's extraordinary raspberry and kirsch purity meets the garrigue herb character of Provençal lamb — herbes de Provence amplify Rayas's wild herb note; the lamb's fat softens the wine's ethereal quality; garlic bridges the wine's aromatic depth. A pairing of southern France's greatest wine and its most cherished meat tradition.

Château Rayas's ethereal Grenache — more Pinot Noir-like than typical Châteauneuf — achieves its most complete food expression with pigeon: the game bird's delicate gamey richness is amplified by the wine's raspberry and pomegranate character; cherry sauce bridges wine and bird; pommes sarladaise provide the Périgord richness that the wine's translucent quality demands. A pairing of Rhône and Périgord elegance.
