Marukyu Koyamaen Gyokuro Unkaku

Uji, Japan
Marukyu Koyamaen's Unkaku (Cloud Crane) gyokuro is their premium expression of the shade-grown genre — produced for tea ceremony use where gyokuro serves as an alternative to matcha in the pre-ceremony kaiseki context. Marukyu's house gyokuro style tends toward a slightly more structured, complex character than Ippodo's more purely oceanic approach: more distinct vegetal complexity alongside the marine umami.
The deductive profile Library
appearanceVery dark jade-green rolled needles; glossy surface
noseMarukyu's house gyokuro style: marine umami but with added complexity — layered vegetal notes (asparagus, sweet green bean) alongside the seaweed depth. More dimensions than a purely oceanic gyokuro
palateRich umami with added structure: the Unkaku has more distinct layers than some purely theanine-forward gyokuros. Still requires 60°C brewing; still produces extraordinary umami — but with additional complexity
finishLong; layered; the vegetal complexity lingers alongside the oceanic umami
