Soalheiro Alvarinho Monção e Melgaço

Vinho Verde DOC, Portugal
The benchmark for Portuguese Alvarinho — from the Monção e Melgaço sub-zone at 200-250m altitude on granite-over-schist soils, where Atlantic rainfall (1,600mm annually) and cool temperatures preserve freshness while extended sun exposure (the south-facing solar hill of 'Soalheiro' — 'sunny place') achieves full phenolic maturity. João Cerdeira's father planted the first Alvarinho here in 1974; the wine has set the stylistic template for single-variety Alvarinho ever since. The profile is distinctive: white peach and lemon blossom aromatics, saline minerality from schist, and a refreshing acidity that places it between Galician Albariño and premier Burgundy Chablis on the mineral white wine spectrum.
