Dubbel, Quadrupel, and Belgian Strong Dark Ale — The Dark Side of Belgian Brewing

‹ Provenance 500 Drinks: Beer

I

Origin

The Dubbel style was created at Westmalle Trappist brewery in 1926; the Quadrupel was created at La Trappe in 1991. Westvleteren began producing its 12 (now the most coveted) in 1940. St. Bernardus received the original Westvleteren yeast culture in 1946 and used it until 1992. Rochefort has been producing strong ales since 1899.

Description

Belgian strong dark ales represent the most complex and contemplative expressions of the Belgian brewing tradition — high-gravity ales of deep amber to near-black colour, characterised by rich dark fruit (raisins, prunes, figs, dark cherries), chocolate, caramel, and warming alcohol from complex malt bills and distinctive Belgian ale yeast strains. The Dubbel (6.5–8.5% ABV) is dark amber with dried fruit and chocolate; the Quadrupel (10–14% ABV) is the most powerful expression, pioneered by La Trappe (the Netherlands, 1991) — a beer of extraordinary richness, warmth, and longevity. Rochefort 10 (11.3% ABV), Westvleteren 12 (10.2% ABV), and St. Bernardus Abt 12 (10.5% ABV) are the most revered expressions of the Quadrupel style — each representing a unique expression of the Belgian Abbey fermentation tradition applied to maximum gravity. These beers are genuinely collectible and age-worthy — Rochefort 10 and Westvleteren 12 develop extraordinary complexity over 3–10 years of bottle conditioning.

The Thread

—Quadrupel's complexity and ageing potential parallels the finest Sauternes, Tokaji Aszú, and Vintage Port as beverages that reward patience and develop extraordinary complexity over years. The Belgian dark abbey ale tradition connects to the monastic brewing traditions of Burgundy wine and French cognac as fermented beverages produced under religious oversight with centuries of accumulated knowledge.
