Lebaran Food: The Eid al-Fitr Table

Lebaran (Eid al-Fitr — the feast ending Ramadan) is the most important annual food event in Indonesia, a country of 240+ million Muslims. The Lebaran table is the result of 30 days of fasting channelled into a single morning feast, followed by days of family visiting in which the same preparations appear on every table in every household. The compositions vary by region but the national vocabulary is broadly shared: ketupat, opor ayam, rendang, sambal goreng, and nastar (pineapple tart cookies) are present on Lebaran tables from Aceh to Papua, with regional variations around this fixed core.
