The Black Panther Party Free Breakfast Program

The Black Panther Party's Free Breakfast for School Children Program — launched in 1969 at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Oakland, California — was simultaneously a political statement, a nutritional intervention, and one of the most effective community food programs in American history. It was so effective that the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover identified it as more dangerous to the established order than the Party's armed activities, and agents were assigned to undermine it. By 1970, the program was feeding over 20,000 children daily in cities across the country.
