Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU)
Philosophy
Represents 300,000+ smallholder Oromo farmers across Oromia region including Harrar, Guji, Limu, and Jimma zones. Established 1999 with support from Fairtrade. The OCFCU was among the first to demonstrate that cooperatives could achieve premium pricing for Ethiopian coffee. Harrar lots through OCFCU channels are the most consistent access point for authentic Harrar natural-process coffee.
Reputation
OCFCU's story — and Tadesse Meskela's advocacy for fair prices — became globally known through the documentary Black Gold. The cooperative model pioneered by OCFCU has been replicated across Ethiopian coffee producing regions.
