Opus One Winery
Philosophy
The joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild — announced at a White House dinner in 1979, released with the 1979 vintage. Opus One produces a single wine from a single Oakville estate vineyard: a Bordeaux blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The architecture (designed by Scott Johnson) is as statement as the wine. Annual production approximately 25,000 cases.
Reputation
Opus One is the most recognised California-French collaboration wine in the world — and arguably the most successful joint venture in wine history. The wine consistently scores 95+ and ages magnificently. At $350+ CAD retail it sits at the apex of accessible Napa luxury. Available at BC LDB and private wine stores.
