Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Burgundy, France
Minimalist, non-interventionist philosophy: complete destemming, cold soak before fermentation at 30–32°C, gentle extraction via pumping over only, 12–18 months in barrel with restrained new oak (∼20% for premier crus). No fining or filtration unless necessary. The expression of terroir—Pinot d'Angerville's legendary small berries and high skin-to-juice ratio—takes absolute precedence.
Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, proprietor of the Clos des Ducs monopole in Volnay, has been in the d'Angerville family for over 200 years. Baron du Mesnil acquired the Clos des Ducs in 1804; in 1888, his great-grandson Sem, Marquis d'Angerville, then aged 15, inherited the estate. After the phylloxera crisis, from 1906 Sem reconstructed the vineyards with what are now the prized Pinot d'Angerville clones.
AllocationStrong convergence across multiple independent wine merchant sources on core facts: 16.5 ha total, ~11.5 ha Premier Cru Volnay, biodynamic since 2006 with certification from 2009 vintage. Production volume estimated at 5,000–6,000 bottles annually. Biodynamic certification body (Demeter vs. other) not explicitly named in web results, flagged for review. Succession note: Guillaume d'Angerville took over 2003 after father Jacques's death; his daughter Margot joined the team as of 2024 and is being groomed for succession (multiple recent sources). US importers identified as Grand Cru Selections (NYC-based) and Vineyard Road; UK importer confirmed as Corney & Barrow. Founding year 1804 reflects Baron du Mesnil's acquisition; land itself documented in 1507 under Dukes of Burgundy. Estate bottling began 1920s under Sem d'Angerville, not at foundation. French official website uses "Marquis d'Angerville" as primary label form.
