Domaine de Bellene

Burgundy, France
Whole-cluster fermentations with indigenous yeasts, minimal new oak (10–30% depending on cuvée), natural winemaking without added acid, sugar, or enzymes. Light wax-sealed bottles on recycled paper reflect ecological commitment. Vinification emphasizes terroir expression and vintage character over standardization.
Domaine de Bellene emerged in 2005 when Nicolas Potel, son of legendary vigneron Gérard Potel of Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, purchased old-vine parcels in Beaune following the sale of his earlier négociant business to the Cottin brothers. The domaine was renamed from Domaine Nicolas Potel in 2008, taking its name from Bellene, the Celtic sun god for whom ancient Beaune was first known—a gesture toward restoring the house as a Beaune reference.
AllocationCRITICAL SUCCESSION UPDATE: Nicolas Potel passed away in July 2025 at age 56. The 2024 vintage is his final production. His three children—Alphonse, Antonia, and Emilien—are committed to continuing the domaine's philosophy. Farming practice listed as biodynamic_practicing rather than certified, as no formal Demeter or AB certification is documented in available sources, though sources confirm biodynamic methods on the domaine website and in multiple merchant descriptions. Certification bodies array is empty pending formal documentation. US importer unverified; Nicholas Pearce Wines and Maverick Beverage (Texas) appear to distribute in North America but no primary distributor confirmed. Production volume estimated conservatively at 50,000 bottles/year (24 hectares × 2,000–2,500 bottles/hectare typical for Burgundy). Founded year and family/person verified from multiple sources. Succession status marked 'transitioning' due to recent death and active handover to next generation. Appellation list reflects multi-site holdings across six distinct appellations as verified by source citations. | Importer overflow captured (importer_uk): 'Armit Wines, Berry Bros. & Rudd, Lay & Wheeler' | Importer overflow captured (importer_other): 'Nicholas Pearce Wines Inc (Canada)' | Importer overflow captured (importer_other): 'Theis Vine (Denmark)'
