Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Burgundy, France
Philosophy
Minimal intervention vinification with whole clusters and extended cuvaison at low temperature; 100% new oak maturation from Tronçais forest. Hand-tended vineyard cultivation employing horses rather than tractors to preserve soil integrity; yields deliberately restricted to 25 hl/ha through severe pruning and meticulous triage at harvest.
Reputation
The Abbey of Saint Vivant first cultivated these sacred vines in 1232. The vineyard changed hands through centuries of political intrigue until 1760, when Louis François, Prince of Conti, claimed it in a legendary auction, lending his name to what became the world's most exclusive terroir. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet acquired and structured the modern domaine in 1869, consolidating holdings that would establish Burgundy's definitive expression of Pinot Noir.
