OVID Napa Valley
Napa Valley, United States
Philosophy
Ferments exclusively with native yeasts; bottles without fining or filtering. Block-by-block separation in underground concrete tanks permits precise terroir expression. Tension between classical discipline and experimental methodology yields wines of mineral precision and architectural depth, aged primarily in French oak.
Reputation
Founded in 2000 by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson, software entrepreneurs who sold their New York-based Ovid Technologies company in 1998 to pursue winemaking, the estate draws its name from Publius Ovidius Naso, the Roman poet whose Metamorphoses celebrates transformation—a fitting emblem for a venture planted atop volcanic Pritchard Hill, one of Napa's most challenging and rewarding terroirs.
