Tenuta delle Terre Nere
Sicily, Italy
Philosophy
Minimal cellar intervention with meticulous vineyard management. Separate vinification of distinct crus at controlled temperatures in stainless steel or wood, followed by aging in large French oak barrels—16 months in wood plus one month in stainless steel—to express terroir with restraint and purity rather than winemaker intervention.
Reputation
Established in 2002 by Marco de Grazia, a legendary Italian wine importer who sought to transform overlooked Etna terroirs into world-class expression, Tenuta delle Terre Nere occupies the northern volcanic slopes between Solicchiata and Randazzo—a microclimate so severe yet refined that de Grazia famously termed it the 'Burgundy of the Mediterranean.' The estate inherited volcanic ash soils speckled with black pumice and precious pre-phylloxera vines reaching 200 years in age.
