The reputation — the story that sells at the table

Founded in 1974 in Montepulciano, Tuscany, and named after a 16th-century noble family associated with the town, Avignonesi built an early reputation for Sangiovese-driven Vino Nobile and, notably, its Vin Santo di Montepulciano. Its Le Capezzine estate dates to the 19th century, originally conceived as an agricultural model farm. In 2009, Belgian entrepreneur Virginie Saverys acquired the estate and immediately initiated a comprehensive conversion to organic and biodynamic farming, ultimately extending the holdings to more than 300 hectares across Montepulciano and Cortona. The estate has held B Corporation certification since 2021 and is widely cited as among the largest certified biodynamic wine estates in Italy. Decanter has recognised its leadership in championing single-vineyard Vino Nobile di Montepulciano expressions.

Practice
Avignonesi's approach places the vineyard unambiguously ahead of the cellar: 120 individual plots are harvested and vinified separately using native yeasts, with no winery adjustments, allowing each parcel to speak independently. All fruit is estate-grown across certified organic and biodynamic vineyards. The guiding principle, stated by the estate itself, is to make wine 'starting from the land, respecting time, place and the responsibility toward what comes next.'
