El Silencio Mezcal

Oaxaca — Mezcal, Mexico
El Silencio (est. 2012) represents the accessible end of the artisanal mezcal movement — produced in Oaxaca using traditional espadin agave (the most common mezcal variety), earth-pit roasting, and copper still distillation. While not as artisanal as Del Maguey's village-specific productions, El Silencio made quality mezcal accessible to the US market at a price point that enabled mainstream cocktail programs to serve it. The smoke character is present but more integrated than wild-caught agave mezcal.
El Silencio is the gateway mezcal for bartenders entering the category — approachable smoke, affordable pricing, and consistent quality. Its growth helped establish mezcal as a mainstream cocktail spirit in North America.
