Paulaner Brauerei

Bavaria — Reinheitsgebot, Germany
Paulaner was founded by Franciscan monks in 1634 in Munich, where they brewed Salvator — the world's first Doppelbock. The tradition of monks drinking strong Lent beer (liquid bread) is the origin of the Doppelbock style. Modern Paulaner produces Bavaria's benchmark Hefeweizen and the world's original Doppelbock, both brewed under the strict Reinheitsgebot purity law.
Paulaner Salvator is the world's original Doppelbock — the word 'Salvator' is used as the generic suffix (-ator) for all German strong lager styles. Paulaner Hefeweizen is one of Munich's benchmark Weizen expressions, exported globally as the reference for the style.
