Barbados — Rum

Barbados is the birthplace of rum: the earliest documented rum distillation records date to the 1620s on the island's sugar plantations. Barbados rum is characterised by a pot-and-column distillation system producing elegant, complex spirits of remarkable finesse — quite different from the heavier Jamaican style or lighter Cuban style. Foursquare Distillery under master distiller Richard Seale is widely regarded as producing the world's finest rum: the annual Exceptional Cask Selection releases are allocated globally and command collector premiums. Mount Gay is the world's oldest continuously operating rum brand (est. 1703). The Barbados style: medium-bodied, dried tropical fruit, vanilla, baking spice, and a distinctive minerality from the coral limestone aquifer water.

Year Rating Notes
2018 90 Barbados rum production in 2018 benefited from stable weather and improved sugarcane varietals. The 2018 stocks are the most recent entering aged expression release territory — currently 6 years old in tropical conditions (equivalent to ~18 Scottish years).
2014 95 The 2014 production at Foursquare and Mount Gay represents the peak of modern Barbados rum: GI protection discussions had raised quality standards industry-wide. The Foursquare 2005 vintage (10 years old at release) and the 2014 distillation both demonstrate Barbados at its finest.
2008 97 The 2008 Foursquare Exceptional Cask Selection Domaine de Courcelles XIV was distilled in 2007/2008 and released 14 years later — the most celebrated Barbadian rum produced in a generation. The tropical maturation in coral limestone island conditions and the French wine cask finish created extraordinary complexity: 98/100 critical consensus. A benchmark for Caribbean rum.
