Sta. Rita Hills AVA

Sta. Rita Hills, west of Santa Barbara in the transverse mountain range, is California's most distinctive cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay region. The east-west orientation of the Santa Ynez Valley channels the Pacific's cold marine air directly inland, creating a natural wind tunnel that cools vineyards dramatically. Diatomaceous earth and sandy loam soils over calcareous subsoil give Sta. Rita Hills wines their extraordinary mineral precision and saline character. Sanford & Benedict, Sea Smoke, and Brewer-Clifton have defined the region's wine style.
