Bierzo is a mountainous wine region in northwest Spain's León province, situated at the transition between the Atlantic coast and the Castilian meseta. The region's distinctive Mencía grape, grown on steep slate and clay slopes along the Sil River tributaries, produces wines of remarkable elegance and aromatic complexity — more Burgundy-influenced than typical Spanish reds. The Mencia variety's combination of bright acidity, fine tannins, and floral, mineral character creates a style quite unlike any other Spanish red. The Corullón and Quilos sub-zones are particularly celebrated for old-vine Mencía of extraordinary finesse.
