Getariako Txakolina is the Basque Country's most famous Txakoli appellation, situated on the steep hillsides above the fishing village of Getaria on Spain's Atlantic coast. Txakoli is a distinctive low-alcohol, high-acid, slightly effervescent white wine produced from the indigenous Hondarrabi Zuri grape, with a small amount of Hondarrabi Beltza red grape. The Atlantic climate — high rainfall, cool temperatures, and strong marine influence — creates wines of piercing acidity, saline mineral freshness, and delicate citrus character that are unique in the wine world. Txakoli is traditionally poured from height to aerate and create a fine effervescence.
