South Africa — wine

Paarl Wine District

South Africa's most historically important wine district, located 60km northeast of Cape Town in the Paarl valley beneath the iconic granite dome of Paarl Rock. The district's warm Mediterranean climate, granite and shale soils, and diversity of aspects produce South Africa's most varied wine styles — from the bold Shiraz and Cabernet of the Simonsberg slopes to the Chenin Blanc of older valley floor farms. Paarl is home to KWV (the Cape's historic wine cooperative and now private producer), Fairview (Charles Back's versatile estate), and the prestigious Backsberg and Glen Carlou estates.
