Columbia Valley

The vast high desert basin of eastern Washington, encompassing virtually all of the state's serious viticulture in a region defined by Cascade rain shadow, intense summer sun, and extreme diurnal temperature swings of 20–25°C. Missoula flood soils — chaotic deposits of loess, sand, gravel, and basalt cobble laid down by cataclysmic glacial outburst floods — create vine-stressing conditions of remarkable complexity. Riesling, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, and chardonnay are the foundation varieties; Washington's natural acidity is the house style across reds and whites.

Year Rating Notes
2024 95 Columbia Valley's 2024 delivered a season of exceptional consistency and quality. Following several years compromised by late-season wildfire smoke, 2024 produced clean, balanced wines across the vast appellation, with particular strength in the premium sub-appellations.
2023 86 Hot summer with late monsoon moisture arriving in September forced rapid decisions at harvest. Producers who picked ahead of the rains secured clean, ripe fruit. Those who waited faced dilution. Riesling and Grenache from ancient lakes and cooler sectors excelled.
2022 93 Exceptional heat accumulation across the basin. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah reached full phenolic maturity with remarkable acidity retention. Bold, structured reds with cellaring potential across all sub-AVAs. Whites were harvested at optimum sugar/acid balance.
2021 85 June heat dome stressed valley-floor and low-elevation blocks; berry dehydration recorded in some Walla Walla and Red Mountain sites. Yakima and Ancient Lakes, with their higher elevations and river-moderated temperatures, fared significantly better. Late season cooled, aiding tannin development in stressed vines. Vintage of two halves.
2020 91 Washington's distance from the major Oregon fire zones provided relative protection from smoke taint. Warm, consistent season with no significant weather events produced clean, concentrated fruit. Outstanding for Cabernet-based reds and Syrah; white wines showed pristine varietal character.
2019 94 Extended, cool finish to the growing season allowed exceptional hang time without sugar excess. Cabernet Sauvignon retained acidity while reaching full phenolic maturity. Syrah produced complex, peppery expressions across Yakima and Columbia Gorge. One of the decade's most structured Columbia Valley vintages.
2018 89 Warm, concentrated vintage with high natural alcohol levels. Powerful reds that require cellaring. Whites mostly past their peak. Producers who managed extraction carefully made compelling wines; those who did not produced hot, over-extracted reds.
2017 89 Warm season with some September rain that challenged late-harvest decisions. Producers who harvested before the rain made wines of real elegance; those who waited risked dilution.
2016 97 A near-perfect Columbia Valley vintage that produced some of the finest wines of the decade. Long, warm season with ideal hang time for all red varieties. Textbook heat accumulation and no significant weather events.
2015 95 Back-to-back exceptional warm years. Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah achieved the same ripeness levels as California in a vintage that confirmed the region's world-class status.
